Vacuum Investment Casting at Deloro Microfusion
Vacuum investment casting combines the proven lost-wax casting process with a completely degassed casting atmosphere. The result: components with superior density, dimensional accuracy, and material integrity—even with highly reactive alloys.
In conventional investment casting (lost-wax casting), a wax model of the component is first created, coated with several ceramic layers, and then the wax is melted out. The remaining ceramic mold precisely replicates every detail of the original. In vacuum investment casting, the melting and casting of the molten metal takes place entirely in a vacuum—typically below 10⁻² mbar.
This crucial step prevents any reaction of the melt with oxygen, nitrogen, or hydrogen. This is particularly important for nickel and cobalt superalloys containing reactive elements such as aluminum, titanium, chromium and hafnium: even the smallest oxide inclusions can dramatically impair the fatigue strength of rotating hot gas components.
